Mike has worked in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over thirty years. He was first trained by Ben Yang in the 1980s, then completed his formal qualification, a Bachelor of Health Science in Acupuncture, once training programmes became available in New Zealand. He has taught for many years at the New Zealand School of Acupuncture in Auckland, and has been a member of the New Zealand Register of Acupuncture since 1992. A career highlight was a 2007 visit to Dongzhimen Hospital in Beijing, where he saw acupuncture, tuina (Chinese massage) and Chinese herbal medicine practised in a hospital setting. His other interests include tuina and qi gong (breathing exercises).
Mike has a particular interest in respiratory conditions, especially chronic asthma, bronchitis and allergies. One of his clients, a woman in her early thirties, came to him with ongoing breathlessness and wheezing after an acute viral respiratory illness. It had left her fearful of sleeping at night, chronically tired during the day, and unable to do light exercise or return to work. After a series of six to eight treatments alongside some dietary changes, she improved markedly: her energy returned, she could walk around the block again, one of her favourite things, and her mental health lifted, with the depression and fear of sleeping no longer an issue.
Outside work, Mike enjoys cycling and swimming, which he does regularly on Waiheke Island.
