ACC physio Auckland, no referral needed

Hurt yourself? You can see a physio for an ACC injury without a doctor's referral, and we lodge the claim for you at your first visit. Here is exactly what ACC covers, what you pay, and how to get started at our Ponsonby clinic.

You do not need a referral

Physiotherapists are ACC primary providers, so you can book directly after an injury. No GP visit first, no referral letter, no waiting for a claim number. Just book and come in.

We lodge your ACC claim at the first appointment

At your first visit we assess the injury and lodge the ACC45 claim electronically on the spot. Treatment can start the same session, before ACC has formally accepted the claim. ACC usually confirms acceptance within a week or two by post. If a claim is not accepted, private fees apply, and we will tell you that up front.

What ACC covers, and what it does not

ACC covers injuries caused by an accident: sprains, strains, dislocations, fractures, sports injuries and post-surgical rehab. It does not cover gradual wear and tear, age-related change or illness that is not linked to an accident. If you are not sure whether your problem counts as an injury, come in and we will assess it honestly.

What you actually pay

ACC subsidises the treatment, it is not fully free. You pay a part-charge and ACC covers the rest. The exact figure depends on the appointment length and which of our physiotherapists you see, so here it is laid out plainly with no surprises at the desk.

How many treatments ACC covers

An accepted claim covers a set course of treatment, and if you need more your physio can request an extension from ACC with a short report. Extensions are not automatic, so we plan your care to make each session count.

Injuries we treat under ACC

We treat the full range of musculoskeletal injuries, including lower back pain, sciatica, shoulder injuries, and tendon problems like plantar fasciitis and tennis elbow. Acupuncture for injury pain can also be ACC funded.

What ACC physio costs

The part-charge you pay after the ACC subsidy. Private (non-injury) fees are higher; ask us if your problem is not injury-related.

Common questions

Do I need a referral to claim ACC physio? +
No. Physiotherapists are ACC primary providers, so you can come straight to us after an injury. Not sure how it works? See our full guide on referrals.
Is ACC physio free? +
No, it is subsidised. ACC pays a large part of the cost and you pay a part-charge, shown in the table above. It depends on the appointment length and which physio you see.
Can treatment start before my claim is accepted? +
Yes. We lodge the claim at your first visit and treatment can begin the same session. ACC usually confirms acceptance within a week or two.
What if ACC does not accept my claim? +
Then private fees apply. We tell you this up front so there are no surprises, and if you have private health insurance you may be able to claim there instead.
